Another opportunity to win a Super Cool Squirrel-Colored Dinosaur Picture!! The task?
What does this quote mean to you and how does it apply to you at camp?
For those of you that it is not working to leave a comment, my suggestion is to create a free google account. If that still does not work, feel free to email or fb msg me your responses (you can still win the prize!) and I will post them on the blog.

To me this means that we need to be the example that we want our campers to live by. We can't expect our campers or fellow staff to do what we ask or expect of them if we can't model the same behaviors ourself. Also we need to make sure we "practice what we preach" as far as being that idea leader and role model weather or not anyone is watching...campers are always watching...especially leadership campers.

For me, I take this meaning as we can not only lecture people into listening to us. That just either bores them or leaves a mental note. We have to SHOW them how to approach their own problems, their own tasks, and their own goals. You can not simply look at something and make it work, you'll have to figure out all the options and put forth effort to start. To inspire is to start improving yourself, children pick up on anything. Leadership is only leadership when its followed.

ReplyDeleteI think that this quote means that we as staff need to show leadership to our campers. Not just talk about being good leaders and taking initiative but actually act like good leaders and take initiative. I agree with Hazel saying that this model of leadership cannot just drop off when we're on our time off because even if you are walking around camp to go on your time off campers can still see you; and if campers are watching you, they are paying attention to how you are acting and they will imitate it. I think that this is harder around leadership campers because they are at camp to learn how to be leaders and camp counselors. Therefore modeling good leaders around them is really important.

To me this quote is everything that I believe in. As a teacher/group leader it is important for me to model the level of respect and behavior that I expect from my students or peers. By leading through example you are communicating your expectations nonverbally instead of just verbally telling people what you want. This helps people see what you mean when you say you want them to act a certain way instead of trying to just have them guess how to act based off a list that you verbally tell them. I think that this quote is a lot like the quote that is one of my favorites and that is "Be the change you wish to see in the world" by Gandhi that I take to mean that if you lead by example the rest of the world will follow your model.

To me, this means that a leader cannot just talk the talk but must also walk the walk. It is easy for anyone to talk about what makes a good leader or what needs to be done in order to be a successful leader. However, it takes a truly dedicated leader to show these characteristics rather than just talk about them.
ReplyDeleteI think that is what we, as counselors and camp staff, need to do for our campers. We cannot simply tell them what they need to do, we need to show them. It's as simple, or difficult as that: don't just talk the talk, walk the walk.
Also, I love the picture used for this quote. :)

Lead/teach by example. I think this goes for pretty much everything in life. I know personally that I learn better by seeing something done than just being told how to do it. Although the best way is to do it myself. I'm in an "experimental" class right now where we only have lecture every other day and spend the rest of the time working out problems hands on, and the results have been phenomenal. I think this general concept can be applied far beyond the realm of circuit analysis classes!
