Mid States Camping Conference

WOO-HOO!!!

CAMP IS ALMOST HERE!! FOURTEEN WEEKS UNTIL THE FIRST CAMPERS ARRIVE!!! :0)

Mid States Camping Conference was GREAT!! I hope everybody had a wonderful experience (first time for many of you) and attended lots of educational sessions that we can incorporate at camp this summer.

I have started typing the yellow cards and those will be posted on this blog shortly!

Just like last summer, I will try to update this blog every week. And as many of you know, I LOVE participation. So please, write lots and lots of comments. Tell me what you think - I want to know! The feedback on this blog will definitely make a difference in planning for the summer.

Okay, let's begin. This first "question" is for those of you that went to Mid States.

Choose one of the sessions that you went to that you really enjoyed. Tell us what it was about and how you plan on using the information you learned at camp this summer.

Ready, begin.

First person to answer will be mailed a super cool dinosaur picture colored by me.

  1. My favorite session was Using Art as a Debriefing Tool. I thought the marshmallow challenge was really fun, and I liked drawing the picture as a group when we were done. I thought it was helpful to write down my own thoughts before sharing them with the group because usually when I'm debriefing with a group I spend too much time listening to other people and not really thinking about how I felt. I also went to team building 101 and learned a couple new team building activities and I think it would be cool to use them together!

  2. I enjoyed the Motivation and Inspiration for staff session a lot. Even though it was presented in a research report sort of way, it was very interesting (mostly because I'm a psych student and it's what I did all last year)to see the types of answers they received and conclusions they drew up from the data. I don't want to get my notes out now, but there were some interesting differences between males and females.

  3. I had 2 favorite sessions. One was on the diverse sexuality and gender issues with people today, and the other was about our camps journey. A quote that was said for the LGBT one was "You can not put fear and love in the same room." That was cool cause it means You can not simply accept each other when you have to WORK with each other. You have to take in all sides of a matter, and come forth with whatever questions of concerns you have. Fear is judging and judging is fighting. Nobody wants that, do they?

  4. One of the sessions that I really liked was on easy to add Environmental Education activities. It was all about ways to do nature activities in all areas of camp, not just up at the Nature Center. I learned about lots of fun art projects to do with natural materials and ways to integrate nature scenarios into the low ropes elements. There were also lots of ways to do nature programs at night besides star-gazing like night hikes, and playing games to teach about nocturnal animals. Basically the session gave me examples of ways that we as a staff can help make nature a larger part of camp. I'm really excited to implement some of these ideas at camp this summer!
